Indexing of the Scientific Legacy of Robert Alt

Financially supported by the "Friends of the BBF" the BBF-Archive indexed the legacy of the GDR educational historian and educational scientist Robert Alt (1905–1978).

Project Description

Robert Alt (1905–1978) was a school politician, educational scientist and educational historian in the GDR. From 1941 to 1945 he had been imprisoned in various concentration camps, because of his Jewish origin and his anti-fascist attitude. He survived the British air raid in May 1945 on the luxury steamer "Cap Arcona", on which most of more than 4,600 prisoners died. In 1946, Robert Alt became Professor of Education at the Pädagogische Hochschule Berlin, then worked and taught at the Pedagogical Faculty of the Humboldt-University of Berlin, of which he was Dean from 1958 to 1961. From 1963 to 1970 he headed the "Arbeitsstelle für Erziehungs- und Schulgeschichte" (i.e. "Center for Educational and School History") at the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR (APW) in Berlin, of which he had been a member since 1960.

Examples of his scientific work are the "Bilderatlas zur Schul- und Erziehungsgeschichte" (i.e. "Picture Atlas of School and Educational History"), two volumes of which were published by Volk und Wissen in 1960 and 1965, and his last publication in 1978, "Das Bildungsmonopol" (i.e. "The Educational Monopoly").

robert Alt's legacy, which comprises around twelve meters, was handed over to the archive of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR in 1979. Since 1992, the documents have been cared for as a deposit of the Federal Archives by the BBF archive. In the project, the legacy was completely indexed and is now searchable via the archive database.
