History of School and Subject Teaching
The projects in the research field “History of School and Subject Teaching” aim to investigate the transformation of school and (subject) teaching practices, cultures and institutional structures, particularly since the 19th century.
The Research Area in Detail
Based on the fundamental findings of a social and structural history of schools, the practice-theoretically motivated research at the BBF contributes to a history of educational institutions. The empirical studies are grounded in the assumption that the transformation of instruction and schools can be better assessed and understood by focusing on practical actions and deeds of the historical agents.
Educational practices and cultures are reconstructed in comparative studies and with the help of various sources, including older data from empirical educational research. For example, the history of the Abitur and German Abitur essays have been used to analyze examination practices and their changes, and contributions have been made to the history of subject teaching, school subjects and school knowledge. Current interdisciplinary projects are investigating the changes in school cultures in contemporary history, the history of different types of schools and the performance of schools and teaching.
This makes it possible to identify continuities and long-term transformations, but possibly also breaks in the development of pedagogical institutionalizations.
