Hugo Gaudig – School at the Service of Free-spirited Work
The volume “Hugo Gaudig – Schule im Dienst der freien geistigen Arbeit. Darstellungen und Dokumente” documents findings from a conference the BBF organized on the occasion of Hugo Gaudig’s 150th birthday. The reform pedagogue’s work is complemented by previously unknown articles from Gaudig‘‘s work at a girl’s secondary school in Leipzig.
Project Description
Hugo Gaudig (1860–1923) was one of the most renowned reform pedagogues in central Europe. Since 1900, he chaired the first, and then since 1907 the second secondary school for girls of the city of Leipzig, together with the respective women teachers training seminar. He counts among the circle of so-called “working pedagogues” (Arbeitspädagogen).
Other than Georg Kerschensteiner (1854–1932), Gaudig interpreted “working pedagogy” (Arbeitspädagogik) not primarily as a practical activity, but rather as a free intellectual activity. His conception of free intellectual schoolwork emphasized the pedagogical principle of the learners’ own engagement, retaining an orientation towards the neo-humanist and idealist philosophical categories. Gaudig, however, did not focus on philosophical but rather on methodological aspects. He immediately integrated these methods into his practical work as a school principal.
The first part of this volume reflects findings from a scholarly conference which was held by the BBF on the occasion of Gaudig’s 150th birthday in 2010. In the second part, readers will find Gaudig’s essays that had previously only been published in the school yearbooks of the secondary schools for girls in Leipzig.
