Grammar Schools and Their Structural Change

The volume on the structural change of grammar schools from the Prussian reforms to the reform of the upper secondary school level (“Gymnasium im strukturellen Wandel – Befunde und Perspektiven von den preußischen Reformen bis zur Reform der gymnasialen Oberstufe“) documents findings from a conference held at the BBF.

Project Description

The volume on reforms in the grammar school system comprises eight contributions which focus on the structural change of grammar schools from the reforms in Prussia to the most recent change of the upper secondary school level.

Until today, longer-term lines of education preparing for university are identified with grammar schools (Gymnasium) in Germany. From a social historical perspective, selected facets are focused for reconstruction  with the aim of discussing consistency in change as well as identity and challenges to a school type that has existed for two hundred years. The publication focuses reform approaches by institutions and actors in grammar school education, societal and educational historical caesuras , regional and local case studies.

Their genesis, shaping, transformation and development provides the context for querying the future of grammar schools in the knowledge society.

The volume is based on a conference which was held in the BBF in 2010, entitled “Vom Humboldtschen Gymnasium als ‚zweite Stufe allgemeiner Menschenbildung‘“ (Humboldtian grammar school) as the "second stage of general education of humankind".
